Evidence and uncertainty
What ibogaine is—and what interest does not prove
Ibogaine is a psychoactive alkaloid associated with the iboga plant. Its history and pharmacology are outlined in the Wikipedia overview of ibogaine, but a general description should not be mistaken for proof of a treatment benefit.
Some contact-sport athletes have discussed informal ibogaine use in connection with substance use, trauma symptoms, chronic pain, or difficulties they associate with repeated head impacts. Those accounts may explain why players and families ask questions. They do not establish effectiveness, predict an individual outcome, or show that a particular setting is safe.
For TBI, PTSD, chronic pain, and substance use, the available evidence is uneven and often limited by study design, small samples, and differences between supervised research and informal settings. The TBI and ibogaine evidence review is a useful companion when a player is trying to distinguish a plausible question from a settled clinical conclusion.
